Japanese tend to change glasses by TPO (time, place, and occasion) and these days often have more than one pair per person.

Women in their teens and twenties prefer contact lenses to eyeglasses, regardless of whether they are near or farsighted.

Since the Japanese consumer is brand-oriented, brand-frames, including hundreds of famous overseas brands (e.g. Christian Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Celine. etc). are manufactured and sold in Japan on a royalties basis.

Cheap frames without plating are manufactured in Asian countries, imported to Japan, and sold after having been plated.

In term of quantity potentially over half the frames sold in the Japanese market, disposables included, are imported.

Many frame manufactures are extending business to Europe, Korea, Taiwan, and China actively.

Titanium frames can be produced only in Japan due to the technology required (braziery). They are, therefore, exported from Japan, branded and hallmarked for sale in foreign countries.

Lenses are imported from the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. Swiss, made in Germany, and Solar from Australia are also imported and sold by Japanese distributors.

(2)Sunglasses

Sunglasses are used as fashion items on many occasions, such as during holidays, and while driving.

Sunglasses were traditionally worn for sun protection. Nowadays, however, sunglasses are worn by many people all year round.

Sport glasses, such as ski goggles and swimming goggles, are in great demand.

Sunglasses are imported from Taiwan, Korea, China, India, Hong Kong, the U.S.A., Italy, France, Germany, etc. In term of quantity, most come from Asian countries. The U.S.A. where is the cradle of sunglass, is at the top pf the amount sold, especially Ray-Ban (Bausch & Lomb).

Typical Caucasian facial features differ from those of most Japanese people. Given that the Japanese generally have a much wider bridge and flatter cheekbones, the position of nose-pads and the angle and shape of lenses and temples needs to be adjusted.

Imported sunglasses must be indicated as such, and the material used to make the lens and frame, visible light transmittance, warnings, trademark and so on in accordance with the household article quality control law.
