Transportation Machinery 1996

  1. The actual amount of domestic production of transportation machinery (cranes, winches, conveyors, solid automatic warehouse systems, solid automatic parking lot systems, lifts, moving walk etc.) is as follows:

    Year Total Domestic Demand Export
    1994 JPY 490,000,000,000. JPY 380,000,000,000. JPY 110,000,000,000.
    1995 JPY 530,000,000,000.
    JPY 413,400,000,000.
    JPY 116,600,000,000.

In comparison with the preceding year, domestic demand increased by 14.2% and export demand increased by 1.06%. There were also quite a few imports. (Source: The Japan Society of Industry Machinery Manufactures)

  2. Approx. 3/4 of export goes to the Asian region and the balance approx. 1/4 goes to the Europe, North America and Oceania. Japanese companies Which advanced in Asia are importing these machines from Japan.

  3. The import of completed products is still low due too the following reasons:
    • Long-ranged costly technical guidance is needed to make the products suitable for the strict quality controlled Japanese market.
    • Lack of maintenance and repair services.

  4. As a result of above mentioned reasons, import of the parts from Asia especially from Korea and Chinese Taiwan is increasing. The quality of the importing parts has gradually improved. Import of the parts from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China will be increased.

  5. Among the electric power and the iron and steel industries of Japan, there is a tendency to desire to sell products at inexpensive prices by using inexpensive parts from abroad.

  6. The manual hoist has been imported from China at low price, and its quality has improved as well. This is a cause of price destruction in this market, and greatly influences on Japanese hoist makers> They cannot compete with the import product, so they have just started importing products themselves.

  7. In this field, the overseas advance of Japanese manufacture is still limited, so that de-industrization will start in the near future.

  8. Another element which prevents import into Japan is the Product Liability Law come into force on the 1st of July 1995. There seems to be some Japanese companies who still hesitate to start importing goods, worrying to have some troubles because of this law.

  9. There are some products that have high possibility to be exported to Asian countries such as cranes, loaders and cubic automatic warehouse systems.

  10. This industry has not been seriously suffered from the price splashing and de-industrization caused by inadequate maintenance or Product Liability Law so far. They are still mainly produced in the domestic market and are partly exported to the oversea market. However, the total amount of import including parts will gradually increase in the foreseeable future.
