Recent Japanese Market Information (June 2000)

  1. In order to protect the global environment, Hakuyosha, well-known Japanese laundry company, has begun a shoe cleaning service priced in the region of \2,000 a pair.

  2. Samsung Electronic of South Korea has launched the sale in Japan of refrigerators especially for refrigerating kimchi (Korean pickles). Both home and business models are available.

  3. Riso Education Co., Ltd. has started an Internet juku (private school). Courses, which are all taught on a man-to-man basis, are currently targeted only at elementary and junior high school students.

  4. Sales of notebook PCs are projected to reach 6 million units this fiscal year, putting them on a par with desktops. Domestic demand for PCs was over 10 million in 1999, and some forecasts put unit sales in 2000 at 11.50~12 million.

  5. The washable woolen suits now in the news could well become the norm in the 21st century. As well as being exceptionally environmentally friendly and easy to clean, they do not result in water pollution and can be washed at home.

  6. Yuasa Trading Co., Ltd. has begun production and sale of instant noodles in Vietnam through a joint venture with a local firm. There is thought to be annual demand in Vietnam for 2 billion instant noodle meals, and the venture hopes to achieve sales of 25 million packages and a turnover of \150 million yen in its first year.
